First we have the approach/approach conflict. This conflict involves choices of 2 appealing goals that are incompatible. For example the new year has begun, some of you might have a resolution to have that summer body, but you might also like the idea of eating chocolate every day. So this could be an approach/approach conflict. Both are very desirable choices but don’t necessarily work together. On number 2 we have avoidance avoidance. It's choosing between two undesirable situations. So for example let's say you are diagnosed with breast cancer and the treatment options are mastectomy or chemotherapy, they both have horrible side effects. So both these options would be considered undesirable. Finally we have approach/avoidance. That's a single goal or situation that has attractive and unattractive features. So for example let’s consider smokers who want to quit smoking. They could be torn between wanting to improve their health and wanting to avoid the weight gain they believe will occur.
